Effective July 16, 2024, all alumni CalNet accounts are subject to the CalNet Alumni Lifecycle Management policy.
Please note: campus technical support teams are not able to provide information about the status of your accounts until after they verify your identity. Verification requires that you show support staff a government-issued ID via Zoom.
What happens when student CalNet accounts are no longer active:
- Grace period: former student accounts receive a grace period of 274 days during which they have access to many but not all campus services. Grace starts the day after the Student Information Systems (SIS) determines that the student is no longer active.
- Alumni affiliations: students receive alumni affiliations on their CalNet accounts when they have met criteria as determined by SIS.
- SIS-Extended: former student accounts receive an SIS-Extended affiliation for two years after the end date determined by SIS. Alums with SIS-Extended and alumni affiliations are able to continue to log in to Campus Solutions.
- Transition to alumni account: A former student account with an alumni affiliation transitions to an alumni account after the grace period has ended. Technically, this means that the CalNet record moves from OU = People to OU = ADVCON (Advancement Constituents).
Active/Claimed Alumni Account Management
Alums with active CalNet accounts can log in to any campus service available to alums, such as CalNet Account Manager, bMail (not available to all alums), or the alumni directory, using your CalNet ID and passphrase.
- An active alumni CalNet account is defined as: has a claimed CalNet ID, is not in grace, and is not expired, AND:
- Alums who are eligible for Alumni Email Service must adhere to the renewal process
- Alums who are not eligible for Alumni Email Service must log in to their CalNet accounts at least once every six months, or the account will be inactivated
- Alums who do not log in to their CalNet account for 6 months are expired
- Former students with an alumni affiliation and SIS-Extended affiliation are excluded from the login requirement
- In September 2024, all active alumni accounts were onboarded to CalNet 2-Step. All alumni accounts are required to use 2-Step as long as the account is active.
Immediately Disabling a CalNet Account
To disable a CalNet account immediately, please submit the Exceptional Disabling of CalNet ID or Berkeley email (bMail) Service Accounts(link is external) form to IT Policy at policy-access@berkeley.edu(link sends e-mail). Once IT Policy has reviewed and approved the request, the user's CalNet account will be disabled.
Inactive Alumni Account Management
- An inactive alumni CalNet account is defined as: does not have a personalized CalNet ID or is expired
- Inactive alumni account holders who would like to use CalNet to access alumni services can submit a request to reactivate their alumni CalNet account.
Locked Alumni Accounts

- Locked alumni accounts may be active or inactive
- All locked alums must go through identity verification with ITCS to get unlocked
- When an active account is unlocked, account lifecycle is as above
