How to 2-Step Without Internet or Cellular Service

CalNet 2-Step supports multiple options for authentication that do not require an active internet connection or cellular signal. These options are ideal for traveling or working in areas with poor reception.

  • Duo Mobile App Passcodes: We recommend using the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone. The app can generate a 6-digit passcode even when your phone is offline or in airplane mode. Find instructions on our 2-Step Guide (KB0015541).
  • Print Backup Passcodes: Go to mycalnet.berkeley.edu, select "Manage 2-Step Devices," and click the "Get/Use Bypass Codes" button to obtain a list of ten codes. You can print these out and keep them in a safe place for emergency use.
  • Trust This Browser: When logging in from your own computer, select the "Yes, this is my device" option. Duo will remember you for 30 days, preventing the need to 2-Step every time you log in. Find out how to enable this (KB0015545).
  • Security Keys: You can use a physical USB security key (such as a YubiKey), which provides a hardware-based authentication method that requires no internet or cellular service.
