When you do a bCourses course import, as described in How do I copy content from another Canvas course using the Course Import tool?, the import does NOT include Media Gallery content. (Note that if your Canvas import includes content—Pages, Announcements, Assignment descriptions, etc—with embedded Kaltura media, the media will be embedded in the copied content.)
To import your Media Gallery from another course site, follow the steps listed in Import Channels Feature Description. You must be a Media Gallery manager in both course sites (Media Gallery managers are those with the role of Teacher, Lead TA, TA, or Designer in the course site). If you want to import content from multiple course sites, you can repeat the process; each import is additive and will not overwrite the content already imported.
Please note the following limitations in the Media Gallery import function:
- As indicated in the article, “The Channel Import feature supports the ability to import playlists, only if there are 10 or less playlists in the channel”.
- You cannot selectively import specific media items, only an entire Media Gallery. If you import a complete Media Gallery, you can then remove unwanted content using the steps in How do I remove media from a Media Gallery in bCourses?
- Some media items may be showing in the Media Gallery that you are copying from, not because they were explicitly added to the Media Gallery, but because you (or another person with Media Gallery manager permissions) edited that Media Gallery’s settings and checked “Display embedded media in this Media Gallery”. Such items will not appear in the Media Gallery into which you import content, unless the embedded content was also imported via a Canvas Import AND the Media Gallery in your new site also has “Display embedded media in this Media Gallery” checked. See Edit a Media Gallery Configuration and Metadata to learn where this checkbox is located. (Note: sometimes there is a delay of a few minutes before the media shows in the new Media Gallery after you check “Display embedded media in this Media Gallery”)
- Occasionally, some course sites don’t appear in the list of sites you are presented with to import from. The cause of this issue is unknown. If you have a course site that you believe you should be able to import from and it’s not showing in the list provided, please send an email to kalturahelp@berkeley.edu.
Another option for putting previously used content into a new course site (in the case where you are an owner or a co-publisher of that media) is to simply publish that content to the new site using the steps in How do I publish media from My Media to a Media Gallery in bCourses?
Important Student Privacy Information
If you intend to share video that includes student participation (identifying information such as name, image, or voice), you must follow certain practices; please see the Academic Senate FAQ "If I record a class lecture or discussion, and it includes student participation (identifying information such as name, image, or voice), can I share the recording with individuals who are not enrolled in the course?"
Also, if you import from a Media Gallery into which students have published their own videos, you must remove those student videos from the Media Gallery into which you import, in order to ensure you are in compliance with FERPA requirements.
