All videos uploaded to Kaltura have automatic machine captioning. If professional captioning for a DSP accommodation is needed, please consult the DSP Office Faculty FAQs.
Only owners and co-editors of a Kaltura media can edit and manage captions.
Editing captions
It is a good idea to edit the machine captions that are provided for your videos, to make them more useful to viewers who play them or search for content in them.
To learn how to edit captions, see either the YouTube video Revising Kaltura Auto Captions (bCourses-specific) or the vendor documentation for Editing Captions.
Managing captions
Please see the vendor documentation on how to upload and manage captions. It covers:
- Adding a new caption file
- Modifying the caption label that displays on the player
- Changing the caption file used by default
- Deleting a caption file
- Downloading a caption file
When reading vendor documentation, please be aware of the following:
- When you see "KAF," think "bCourses."
- In step 4 of "To upload captions from MediaSpace or KAF applications," "Upload a captions file" is referencing the blue button next to "Edit Captions" that reads "Upload captions file."
- In step 4 of "To modify the language or the caption selector label," disregard the "disk icon;" click the Save button to update the values.
- The icons referenced in the instructions in "To change the caption file used by default in the media player," "To delete a caption file," and "To download a caption file" can all be found in the Actions column, which is highlighted in the screenshot under step 1 of "To modify the language or the caption selector label."
In addition, you can toggle whether a caption file is displayed as an option on the player (i.e. listed when viewers click the CC control). Note that this is not covered in the vendor documentation, and that the following icons can be found in the Actions column.
-
- The "Show On Player" icon indicates that viewers will not be able to use the captions in this row of the table; to add them as an option, click the icon.
- The "Don't Show On Player" icon indicates that viewers are able to use the captions in this row of the table; to remove them as an option, click the icon.
- The "Show On Player" icon indicates that viewers will not be able to use the captions in this row of the table; to add them as an option, click the icon.
Missing captions
In some cases, machine-captions may be completely missing. YouTube videos uploaded to My Media, regardless of if the original YouTube video had captions or not, are not automatically captioned. Due to errors, Zoom cloud recordings copied to Kaltura by the Zoom to Kaltura integration may also not be automatically captioned.
If captions are missing from your video, please see How can I order machine captioning, including in languages other than English? to learn how to order captions for your video.
