To embed Kaltura media in Pages, Discussions, Assignments, Announcements, and anywhere else in bCourses that uses the Canvas Rich Content Editor, follow the steps below.

To embed Kaltura Media using the Rich Content Editor

  1. With the Rich Content Editor open, click Embed Kaltura Media.
Screenshot of the Embed Kaltura Media option highlighted in the Rich Content Editor

Note: if you see "Application Error" at this point, please go to My Media (in global navigation) or Media Gallery(in course navigation), where a request to “Authorize” Kaltura should  appear. Click the Authorize button, after which you should try step 1 again. If the authorization request does not appear or if authorizing does not solve the problem, please email kalturahelp@berkeley.edu

  1. From the window that opens up on the page, if the media you want to embed is already in your My Media or a Media Gallery, click on the appropriate tab.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • If you are happy with the default embed settings: Click the </>Embed button next to the media you want to embed. The media will be embedded on the page using default settings. (Students will be asked if they want to submit as an assignment before the media is embedded; unless an instructor has directed students to do so, they can click "No, thanks".)
    • If you'd like to have more control over how your video appears, click the settings button for the media item (gear icon to the left of the Embed button).
      1. You will then be able to select different players (e.g. whether it displays a transcript or not) and player sizes and a few other options.
        • Please note that the "skip forward 5 seconds" and "skip backwards 5 seconds" buttons will only appear on players with width at least 328px.
        • If you are embedding an audio only file, make sure that the "Thumbnail Enabled" setting is off, otherwise your audio player will include an unnecessary black thumbnail.
        • If you're picking a player that displays a transcript, you will NOT want to also enable "Thumbnail Enabled" setting. (This is because there is a bug that the vendor won't fix whereby even after the user clicks to show the full video, there's no way to access the transcript.)
        • Students who are directed by their instructors to submit a video as an assigment, should toggle on "Submit as Assignment".
      2. Click the </>Embed button in the upper right of the window when done. The media will be embedded on the page with the settings you have selected.

Important Student Privacy Information

If you intend to share video that includes student participation (identifying information such as name, image, or voice), you must follow certain practices; please see the Academic Senate FAQ "If I record a class lecture or discussion, and it includes student participation (identifying information such as name, image, or voice), can I share the recording with individuals who are not enrolled in the course?"
