Names and e-mail addresses available in the UCB Campus Directory can be added to Thunderbird so these entries can be referenced in the Thunderbird Address book.

To add the UCB Directory (LDAP) to Thunderbird

  1. Right click Get Mail in the upper left corner
  2. Click on the Menu Bar option
  3. Click on Tools in the upper left corner
  4. Click on Options.
    • In Mac OS X under the Thunderbird menu, click Preferences.
  5. Click the Composition icon.
  6. Click the Addressing tab.
  7. In the Addressing window, check the box in front of Directory Server:
  8. Click the Edit Directories button to the immediate right.
  9. In the new window, click on the Add button.
  10. In the next window, enter the following information in the General tab window:
    • Name: CalNet Directory
    • Hostname: ldap.berkeley.edu
    • Base DN: ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu
    • Port number: (default) 389.
    • Bind DN: (default) blank.
    • Use secure connection (SSL): (default) blank.
  11. Click the OK button to save these settings.
  12. Now you should be back at the Addressing tab.
  13. Locate the drop down menu to the right of the Directory Server: text.
  14. Click the drop down menu and select the CalNet Directory option.
  15. Click on the OK button.

To check that the connection to the Campus Directory is working

  1. Click on the Address Book text in the top left of the main Thunderbird window.
  2. In the search box with the magnifying glass located in the upper right of the window, enter one of the following:
    • last name (will often return a bunch of names)
    • last name, first name
    • email address
      • This works similar to when you search the campus directory. Enter the first few letters of the last name, such as 'brow.' Multiple names will be returned, some with the last name containing 'brow' and some with the first name contain 'brow.'
