Berkeley-specific Changes
Summer 2020 Security improvements
The Zoom video conferencing platform is being used widely by faculty, students, and staff for a variety of purposes as we continue to do our work remotely. In an effort to ensure all members of our campus community have safe spaces to meet virtually, we are making enhancements to UC Berkeley Zoom accounts to safeguard against further acts of Zoom bombing and other misuse.
These changes are being implemented over the next few weeks in order to minimize disruptions to instruction once fall classes begin. Default meeting settings will be changed to provide more secure and welcoming online environments.
We are changing the default settings in Zoom to:
- Require passcodes for new meetings.
- Require sign in before joining a meeting.
- Participants muted upon entry.
Specifically, the following changes are being made:

04/02/2020 | Only authenticated users can join meetings
We set up a new authentication profile for the berkeley.edu domain. Per Zoom's security recommendation we removed the 'all zoom users' authentication profile.
