As an instructor, you may add up to twelve questions for each of your courses (6 rating-type questions and 6 open-ended questions). You may copy questions selected for one course for use in another course. You also have the option of submitting no questions. In this case, simply click the “Submit” button without creating any questions. Doing this will spare you from reminder emails asking you to create your own questions.

1. Create a custom rating or open-ended question

  1. Access the question personalization task via the link in your email or by going to course-evaluations.berkeley.edu and finding the "Question Personalization" task for your course from the dashboard.
    • This task is titled "Choose the personalized questions for COURSE NAME (Instructor Name) of TERM Evaluations"

  2. Expand the section where you want to add a question by clicking the down arrow icon to the left of the section title.

  3. Click the "Customize" button to add your question text.

  4. Clicking "Customize" will open a question editor dialogue box. Enter your question text into the text box. When you're finished entering your question close the question editor by clicking the X in the upper right corner.

  5. After closing the question editor your question will replace the placeholder text and the question will be marked as "Included". Questions not marked as "Included" will not be included on the evaluation.
  6. Repeat the steps above as needed to create additional open-ended or rating questions.

**Note that selected questions are not added to the evaluation until you click on "Submit." See steps below.**

2. Copy questions from the previous semester

Instructors can now copy their custom questions from the previous semester's evaluations. Questions are only available to copy from one semester prior to the current semester. For example, in Spring 2022 instructors will be able to copy the questions they added in Fall 2021 only.

  1.  On the question personalization page click on the additional options icon next to the Submit button and select "Copy selections from."
  2.  You will have the option to copy questions from current or previous semester evaluations. Select "Previous", open the search box, and choose from the list of your previous evaluations.
  3. Click "Copy."

3. Preview the evaluation as it will appear to students (including default departmental questions)

Instructors can preview how the evaluation will appear to students. The evaluation preview includes both the default departmental questions and any custom instructor questions.

  1. From the top menu, click "Preview." Make sure "View all" is selected from the drop down menu to the left so all questions are included in the preview.

4. Save a draft of your questions

If you want to save your progress and come back to finalize your questions later you can save a draft of your questions. Saving a draft does NOT add the questions to your evaluations. You must submit your questions before the deadline to finalize your selections and add the questions to your evaluations.

  1. From the top menu, click "Save as Draft." You can then close the page and come back to editing at a later time.

5. Submit to finalize your questions

Personalized questions will not appear on the evaluation form until you click "Submit."

  1. Click the “Submit” button either from the top menu or at the bottom of the page.
  2. You can confirm your personalized questions have been successfully submitted and added to your evaluations if the "Save as Draft" and "Submit" buttons are replaced by the "Update" button.

  3. If you want to change your selections later, you can do so by repeating the edit process and clicking the “Update” button (you can edit your personalized questions up until the deadline).

6. (Optional) Copy your questions to other sections

If you're being evaluated for mutltiple courses and/or sections you can add different personalized questions to each evaluation, or draft your questions once and copy them to your other evaluations.

  1. On the question personalization page click on the additional options icon next to the Submit button and select "Copy selections to."
  2. Click on the "Search" box and select which evaluations you want to copy your questions to then Click the "Select" button.
  3. Under "Options" select "Copy the question to the selected subjects, and submit immediately" and then click "Copy & Submit."
  4. If you have not yet submitted the questions you just copied you will still need to do so (see section 5).

If these instructions didn't address your question about adding custom questions to your evaluation(s) please email the course evaluations team at course-evaluations@berkeley.edu.
