The IST Storage Team offers two data storage options depending on what type of access is needed: Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS).
These are both highly available and highly scalable systems that are offered in two billing tiers: Performance and Utility.
Types of Storage Access
- Storage Area Network (SAN) - The storage-area network (SAN) is a dedicated high-speed network that interconnects and presents shared pools of storage devices to multiple servers. This storage is accessed by block level devices via fiber channel infrastructure that provides high availability and multi-terabyte scale.
- Network-attached storage (NAS) is a type of dedicated file storage device that provides local-area network (LAN) nodes with file-based shared storage through a standard Ethernet connection.File Level Access is done via NFS, CIFS or iSCSI protocols. The NAS is a highly redundant environment with the ability to scale into the 100's of terabytes.
Comparison of Features for each Billing Tier
Feature | Performance | Utility |
---|---|---|
Best Use | Best for high I/O enterprise systems, such as large database servers and VM clusters. |
Best for very large datasets with sequential I/O requirements, such as Backup. It is also well suited for User/Department shares. |
