Not an official instructor of the course?
If you're not an official instructor in the course (one of the people who approved Course Capture for the course), you won't be able to follow the instructions below UNLESS you have been given an Admin Proxy role in the course (which is something your departmental scheduler will have to do) AND the Course Capture's Admin Proxy Publish switch is set to "On".
If neither of the above is true and you need to be able to follow the steps below, you can do one of the following :
- Ask the official instructor to make a copy of the recording (following instructions 1-5 of the "How to share a copy of a Course Capture to a student's My Media" section in this article) and assign you as a co-editor on the copy (see How do I add collaborators or change the owner of my Kaltura media?). Then, you can follow the instructions below on the copy.
- Ask your department scheduler for assistance to add you as an official instructor of the course so that you will be automatically added as a co-editor on new Course Capture videos. Then, you can follow the instructions below on future recordings.
- Ask your department scheduler for assistance to add you as an Admin Proxy to the course AND ask an official instructor on the course to email coursecapture@berkeley.edu requesting that the Course Capture's Admin Proxy Publish switch gets set to "On". (It's possible that one of these requirements has already been met.) Once both changes have been made (and a day or two has passed to allow for your departmental scheduler's changes makes to make their way to Course Capture) you will be added as a co-editor on any future Course Capture videos and will be able to follow the instructions below on those future recordings.
Sharing a Course Capture through an Assignment
One way of sharing your Course Capture with only certain students is embedding your video into an assignment that you assign to only those students. The steps you take will depend on the Course Capture settings you chose.
How to share a Course Capture with certain students via an assignment if your Course Capture settings are "GSI/TA Moderation"
If you signed up for "GSI/TA moderation", you have to take the preliminary step of rejecting the video in the Pending Tab before you embed it in an assignment that you only assign to certain students. This is because the act of embedding also "Approves" the video for publication and moves it into the Media Gallery where all students in the course can see it. If you don't reject the video before embedding it in an assignment, it will show up in the Media Gallery.
- Follow the steps in How does one publish a Course Capture recording that's set to GSI/TA moderation? except select Reject in the last step instead of Approve.
- Go to your bCourses site and follow the instructions in How do I assign an assignment to an individual student? until you reach the "Add Assignment Details" step.
- From here, embed the video you wish to share in the Assignment Details by following the instructions in How do I embed Kaltura media in bCourses using the Rich Content Editor?
- Unless you want students to submit something that you'll grade, you'll want to set "Display Grade as" to "Not graded".
- Go back to How do I assign an assignment to an individual student?, and follow the rest of the instructions to publish your assignment (and Course Capture) to only certain students.

Sharing a Course Capture to a student's My Media
You can also allow certain students to view your video in their own My Media by making them Co-Viewers on the media.
Please note that for this method, it is necessary to create a copy of a Course Capture and share the copy rather than the original video. This is because when you participate in Course Capture, you do not have ownership of your videos (The Course Capture service has ownership). This limits what you are able to do with the recordings, including the ability to add Co-Viewers and other collaborators to your media. You must create a copy to become the owner of your video and thus be able to gain full control over your video.
It takes time to re-process the video to create the copy, so if you are looking for the quickest way to share, you will likely want to use the "Assignment" method above.
How to share a copy of a Course Capture to a student's My Media
- Access your My Media in the site navigation of your bCourses site. If your bCourses site does not have My Media in the site navigation, see How do I add My Media or Media Gallery to my bCourses site?
- Open your video in the Kaltura video editor by following the instructions in the "Launching the Kaltura Video editor" section of How do I use the Kaltura video editor?
- From here, you can edit your video using the tools described in How do I use the Kaltura video editor?, or you can skip editing and click Save a Copy immediately to create a copy of your video in your My Media. If you choose to edit your video, make sure to still click Save a Copy after making your edits before proceeding.
- The "Save a Copy of the Media" window will appear. Enter a title for the copy of your media and click Create.
5. The "Success" window indicates that a copy of your video has been created. Click Go to Media Page to access the copy. Note that it might take a few minutes for your new copy to process.
6. Following the instructions in How do I add collaborators in bCourses and MediaSpace?, grant your student(s) the Co-Viewer role for this copy of your video.
7. Students with a Co-Viewer role will now be able to view your media in their own My Media.
