How do I embed Kaltura media in bCourses using the Rich Content Editor?

To embed Kaltura media in Pages, Discussions, Assignments, Announcements, and anywhere else in bCourses that uses the Canvas Rich Content Editor, follow the steps below.

To embed Kaltura Media using the Rich Content Editor

1. With the Rich Content Editor open, click Embed Kaltura Media.
   

1. From the window that opens up on the page, if the media you want to embed is already in your My Media or a Media Gallery, click on the appropriate tab.
   • My Media allows you to embed media from your My Media.
   • From the Media Galleries dropdown menu, you can select a bCourses site to embed media from that course's Media Gallery.
   • Media Gallery Playlists allows you to embed Playlists that have been created in the Media Gallery of the bCourses site in which you are doing the embedding.
     
     
     If the media you want to embed isn't already in My Media or Media Gallery or Media Gallery Playlists, you can click +Add New and add media to your My Media or Media Gallery using Media Upload, Express Capture, YouTube, or Kaltura Capture. 2. If you are happy with the default embed settings: Click the </>Embed button next to the media you want to embed. The media will be embedded on the page using default settings. (Students will be asked if they want to submit as an assignment before the media is embedded; unless an instructor has directed students to do so, they can click "No, thanks".)
3. If you'd like to have more control over how your video appears:
   1. Click the settings button for the media item (gear icon to the left of the Embed button). 
   2. Make any selections you'd like: 
      • Select a player. Your options include a player with all standard features ("Video player"); a player that does not include a transcript ("Video player w/no transcript"); and a player ("Video player w/text-protected transcript") which includes the transcript but prevents users from selecting and copying its text, and does not provide " the options to "Download current transcript" or "Print current transcript". The same options are available when you embed a Playlist. 
      • Select a Max Embed Size
      • Choose a Start Time.
      • Note that the "Thumbnail Embed" setting does not have any impact on any of the players you can select at this time

        • • Students who are directed by their instructors to submit a video as an assignment, should toggle on "Submit as Assignment".
      • Note that the "Thumbnail Embed" setting does not have any impact on any of the players you can select at this time.

   3. Click the </>Embed button in the upper right of the window when done. The media will be embedded on the page with the settings you have selected.  
      
      
      

Important Student Privacy Information

If you intend to share video that includes student participation (identifying information such as name, image, or voice), you must follow certain practices; please see the Academic Senate FAQ "If I record a class lecture or discussion, and it includes student participation (identifying information such as name, image, or voice), can I share the recording with individuals who are not enrolled in the course?"

Additional Notes:

• Kaltura is our recommended platform for sharing video in bCourses to the members of the course site in which the content is embedded. For alternate embedding options appropriate for a course site with a Visibility setting of "Institution" or "Public," see How do I embed media in bCourses?
• Please be aware that Kaltura Media embedded in a bCourses Announcements is stripped from the version of the Announcement that is sent via email. The recipient can always click through the link in the email to view the full announcement as it was intended to be seen in their browser, but unfortunately, there is no indication that they are not seeing the full message in their email. If you have embedded media in an Announcement that you expect students will view as email (rather than opening the Announcement in bCourses), make sure to state that they should click "view announcement" to view the full message in their web browser.
• We have had numerous reports of users seeing "Access Denied" on an intermittent basis (i.e. this behavior "comes and goes") on Pages that have multiple Kaltura videos embedded. If possible, you may want to avoid putting multiple videos on a page. Alternatively, consider warning students on the page that they should refresh the page and/or wait a few minutes if they get Access Denied.
