What are my recording and storage options for Zoom meetings and webinars?
You have two options for recording your meetings or webinars in Zoom:
- Local recording, which allows participants to record the meeting video and audio locally to a computer. The recorded files can be uploaded to a file storage service like Google Drive, or a streaming service like YouTube or Vimeo.
- Cloud recording, which allows participants to record the meeting video, audio, and chat text and save in the Zoom cloud temporarily. The recording files can then be downloaded to a computer or streamed from a browser. Note: Accounts with added HIPAA security have this feature disabled.
Which recording type is best?
- Local recording, is the best option for when you need a persistent copy of your recording as it will save the recording files to your computer.
- Cloud recording is a good option for when you need only a temporary recording, or would like to take advantage of Zoom’s audio-transcription feature. Note: Due to high storage costs, Zoom Cloud recordings will only be stored for 30 days before they are deleted automatically by Zoom at the conclusion of fall semester 2020.
How do I download my recordings?
- In a web browser, navigate to berkeley.zoom.us, click Sign in and enter your CalNet ID and passphrase.
- In the Zoom navigation menu, click Recordings (it defaults to Cloud Recordings tab)
- Find the recording you want to download (adjust the date range and use search, if necessary) and click the topic name.
Note: If your meeting has not finished converting, the recording will show in the list with a Processing Recording label; try again later. - Click on the Download button to download all the recordings' files OR hold your mouse over one of the files below (e.g., Shared screen with speaker view, Audio only) and click the download button to download just the file.
- You can also export a list of cloud recordings or export a CSV of viewing analytics
Where should I store my recordings?
- Faculty and instructors who want to save and/or share your Zoom recordings, please follow the instructions from the Research, Teaching, and Learning team for sharing Zoom Recording: Kaltura, bCourses, Google Drive.
- Staff and students who want to save and/or share your Zoom recordings, you can save them on your local computer, or upload them in Google Drive.
