Microsoft Windows
Download the Windows 32bit or 64bit client by accessing the bSecure GlobalProtect portal using your CalNet credentials: https://vpn.berkeley.edu
- You will be presented with the Welcome screen, click Next to continue
- You will be asked where to install the software, the default is best so click Next to continue
- The installer will ask you if you want to install the software, click Next
- Windows Account Control system will ask you to verify that you want to allow the installer to make changes to the system. The installer will have a seemingly random name that ends with “.msi”, click Yes
- The installer will show you it’s progress and then present you with a completion screen
- Click close to complete the installation
- You can now access the GlobalProtect client (a globe icon) from the services list at the bottom right hand corner or the screen to see the login window.
- Enter “vpn.berkeley.edu” (without the quotes) and click Connect
- You will see a popup that shows the standard CalNet login page, authenticate as you normally would.
- Once the connection is in place you can view your connection by clicking the GlobalProtect globe again, from this screen you can also select an alternative VPN connection from the pulldown.
You can disconnect by clicking the disconnect button and reconnect by clicking the connect button.
Apple MacOS X
Download the Mac 32/64bit client by accessing the bSecure GlobalProtect portal using your CalNet credentials: https://vpn.berkeley.edu
- Go to where you have software download, usually the Download folder, and double click on the GlobalProtect.pkg file
- MacOS X may warn you that the software has been downloaded from the Internet, and you will have to approve using the software.
- You will be presented with the Welcome page and need to click Continue
- You will be presented with the Custom Install page, GlobalProtect will be selected by default and you should click Continue
- The installer will verify that you do in fact want to install the software, click continue
- When the software is done you will see a success page and the GlobalProtect icon (a small globe) will show up in the service list at the top or your screen. Click Close to continue
- You will receive a popup asking if the installer should be moved to the trash. We recommend that you Keep the software as the same installer can be used to uninstall the software.
- Now select the GlobalProtect globe from the service bar at the top or your screen
- Enter “vpn.berkeley.edu” (without the quotes) in the portal address field and click Connect
- A popup window will appear with the standard CalNet login page, authenticate as normal to continue
- The window will then briefly show that you are connected before minimizing back into the services list.
- You can change which VPN connection you are using by selecting another from the pulldown. The client will remember your choice between connections unless the software is updated.
- Disconnect by clicking the disconnect button.
Apple iOS
- Open the App Store and search for “GlobalProtect”, it is listed under Business applications, and install it.
- When the installation is complete open / launch GlobalProtect, the icon is a globe with a shield.
- If you have not had a VPN product installed on your device before the client will inform you that it is activating the functionality and you have to touch OK to continue.
- You will be brought to the settings page.
- Touch the line labeled Portal and enter “vpn.berkeley.edu” (without the quotes)
- Touch the Connect button, you will be taken to the standard CalNet authentication page
- If you successfully connect you will be taken to the status screen.
- You can disconnect, or change which connection you are using on the Home screen
When you want to use the VPN in the future, launch the GlobalProtect client and then select which VPN you wish to use. That will start the authentication process through CalNet.
Google Android
- Open the Google Play Store and search for “GlobalProtect”, it is by Palo Alto Networks, and install it.
- When the installation is complete open / launch GlobalProtect, the icon is a globe with a shield.
- You will see the initial configuration page
- Enter “vpn.berkeley.edu” in the portal address field and click connect
- Android OS will then let you know that GlobalProtect is attempting to setup a VPN connection, allow it by clicking OK
- You will then see a popup for the CalNet authentication page to connect to the VPN
- Once the connection is in place you will be shown the Connection page which lists the available VPN connections available.
- You can disconnect by clicking the Disconnect button.
Google ChromeOS
Note: At this time the ChromeOS client will only connect to the Split Tunnel VPN service. We expect this to be corrected in future releases for the GlobalProtect software for ChromeOS.
- Launch the WebStore and search for “GlobalProtect”, it is by Palo Alto Networks, then click the + ADD TO CHROME button.
- You will be prompted by the WebStore to make sure you wish to install the software, click Add app
- Close the web store and open the GlobalProtect application, the icon is a globe with a shield, and you will be presented with the setup page
- Enter “vpn.berkeley.edu” (without the quotes) in the portal address field and click Add Connection
- You will then be presented with the portal status page
- Close that window and open the ChromeOS system tray, you will see a new entry for VPN, click on it
- Now click on the vpn.berkeley.edu entry to start the login process
- The connection process may take a long time (greater than a minute) to start, once the initial communication is over you will be presented with the CalNet login screen.
- One successfully authenticating the device will check with each or the available gateways to verify your access. During this period the device may report that the VPN connection failed.
- You can watch the status of the connection by launching the GlobalProtect application
- To disconnect click the disconnect button at the bottom or the status page or open the system bar, click on the VPN, then choose disconnect.
At this time if the GlobalProtect client is configured incorrectly, for example with a typo in the name portal name, the only way to fix it is to uninstall it and then reinstall it through the WebStore.
