Media Owners and Co-editors can always download their media files. They also can decide what media files can be downloaded by others who have access to the videos on a per-video basis. By default, the download option is not available for viewers who are not Media owners or Co-editors of the video in question.

These steps apply to both bCourses and MediaSpace.

About dual-stream video downloads

Dual-stream videos are those for which the viewer has control over two separate video streams—usually one for the camera and one for the screen capture—separately, so that, for example, they can change the relative size of each stream. Course Capture videos are always dual stream. Zoom recordings may or may not be dual-stream depending on the host's Zoom settings. See "How do my Zoom settings impact how recordings appear in Kaltura?" for more info.)

There is no way to download both streams into a single file. Media Owners and Co-editors can download either or both streams as separate files. Viewers can only download the primary stream (the stream that, by default, loads as the larger of the two streams). Whichever stream is downloaded, it will include the audio.

How to download video files via the Edit page (only for media Owners and Co-editors):

  1. Access My Media in the global navigation in your bCourses (the vertical navigation bar on the left) or MediaSpace.
  2. Select the title of the media in question. The media entry page will load.
  3. From the Actions dropdown menu, select Edit
The Edit option selected from the Actions dropdown menu.
If, at this point, you see an error message ("Something went wrong") where you would expect the video player to appear, and you have specified a "Specific Time Frame" for your Publishing Schedule, you are likely encountering a bug that we hope will be repaired soon. In the meantime, you will need to switch to "Always" for your Publishing Schedule, and repeat steps 1 thru 3 above, and then continue on to step 4. After completing step 7, you can reset your "Specific Time Frame". (If it is important to you that the video not be visible while you are completing the steps to download, you will also want to unpublish the video wherever it is published.) Send email to kalturahelp@berkeley.edu if you need help with this unpublishing, or if you have not specified a "Specific Time Frame".
  4. Click the Play button in the middle of the video area in order to load the video.

  5. Select the Download button (in the upper left of the video player).

    The Downloads window opens.
  6. In the Downloads window, select the box for a stream you want to download. Single stream videos will have only a "Main stream"; dual stream videos will have "Additional streams". (The "Main stream" is the one that fills the player frame when you first load the video; with Course Capture videos, it is random which stream is the camera and which is the screen.)
  7. Repeat step 6 if there are any additional streams you want to download.

Please note that captions are not included in the media download. Captions are a separate choice in the Downloads window.

How to download video or audio files (for viewers):

Viewers are only allowed to download Kaltura media that the Owner or Co-editor has set to allow for downloads. If you do not see the Download tab shown in the directions below, then the media has not been set as downloadable.

  1. Go to the page on which you can play the media. Depending on how it is shared, this will either be through a bCourses site’s Media Gallery, or MediaSpace. (You cannot download media that is embedded on a bCourses page.)
  2. Click the Download tab, which should be next to the Attachments tab. (If your browser window is not wide enough, you may not see a Download tab; instead, you’ll need to click Details and then select Download.)

  3. Click the download icon under the Actions column on the format you wish to download.

How to download still images (for anybody):

Drag the image in the media player to the desktop OR right click the image and choose "Save image as."

Where to find downloaded media

Where the media gets saved is dependent on your browser settings, but it's likely that you'll find it in your Downloads folder.
