Why can't I see Berkeley-IoT on my list of Wi-Fi networks?

Berkeley-IoT is still in testing and is not available at all UC Berkeley locations. The network will be available everywhere eduroam can be found on campus property January 10th, 2023.

Why is Berkeley-IoT harder to use than my home network?

Home Wi-Fi networks are designed to be as simple as possible for people to use. Typically you have a password you share with your family and friends and you know the people with whom you share your home’s password. Every device uses that password to connect fast and easy.

At UC Berkeley we don’t know everyone and the more than 70,000 devices that connect to our network. Each device could theoretically connect with another. The Berkeley-IoT Wi-Fi network needs to account for that and because it is an enterprise network, Berkeley-IoT needs to verify individual devices instead of allowing everything and everyone to connect using the same password.

We've made it as easy as possible, while still maintaining the security and privacy protections that you expect on the Berkeley network. .

Why does every Berkeley-IoT device have a different password?

On Berkeley-IoT Wi-Fi, each device is like a user, and users have to have passwords to connect to and use services at UC Berkeley.  To protect the security and privacy of every individual, and every device, a password is needed for each.

Can I use a SPA account to manage my Berkeley-IoT devices?

Yes, just like with eduroam, we support SPA accounts in addition to traditional CalNet accounts.

You just need to put a plus (+) in front of your CalNet ID in the CalNet login portal when you log in and then select the SPA account from the list of accounts on your access list.

Why does my device tell me UPnP Not Successful?

UPnP is something home networks do to make it easier for the Internet to talk to your device. UPnP is needed for things like multiplayer games on PlayStation and XBox so the game systems can talk to each other over the Internet. Enterprise networks like Berkeley-IoT do not support UPnP, but we do have a solution.

Edit the device that needs UPnP on the Berkeley-IoT device management page. On the edit window there is a checkbox for "Public IP?", select it and click Save Changes. The next time your device connects to Berkeley-IoT it will be given a different type of Internet address, one that doesn't need UPnP.

If your device is already connected you will need to reboot it so it can reconnect and get the new address.

Please be aware that your device is now on the Internet without any security or privacy protections, so be sure it's up to date and if it has a firewall it is enabled. We recommend that the password on these devices be unique, that you do not store any private/protected data that you don’t want the world to see on this device, and that you do not do any private/protected transactions that you don’t want the world to see on this device.  Even though it’s on the Berkeley network, you have elected to turn off the security/privacy protections provided by the Berkeley network.
