To embed Kaltura media in Pages, Discussions, Assignments, Announcements and anywhere else in bCourses that uses the Canvas Rich Content Editor, follow the instructions below.
1. With the Rich Content Editor open, do one of the following:
- If you are an instructor creating course content to be presented to students, click Embed Kaltura Media
- If you are a student, submitting video for an Assignment, Quiz or other graded activity, click the Apps icon . and then select Kaltura Video Submission. (Note: If you do not see the Apps icon at first, click the 3 vertical dots to show all icons.)
The first time you click the Apps icon, you'll see a dialog in which you'll need to scroll down to find Kaltura Video Submission. After you do it once, you'll find Kaltura Video Submission in the dropdown that appears as soon as you click the Apps icon.) This provides your instructor with a timestamped non-editable copy of the original media)
2. From the window that opens up on the page, if the media you want to embed is already in your My Media or the Media Gallery, click on the appropriate tab (My Media or Media Gallery), and then click the Embed button next to the media you want to embed. The media will be embedded on the page. (If there are Playlists in the course site's Media Gallery, you can also embed one of those playlists; click the Media Gallery Playlists tab to get a list of playlists that you can embed.)
(If the media isn't already in My Media or Media Gallery, you can select Add New and add media to your My Media or Media Gallery using the options provided: Media Upload, Express Capture, YouTube, Kaltura Capture.)
Note: Kaltura Media embedded in a bCourses Announcements is stripped from the version of the Announcement that is sent via email. The recipient can always click through the link in the email to view the full announcement as it was intended to be seen in their browser, but unfortunately, there is no indication that they are not seeing the full message in their email. If you have embedded media in an Announcement that you expect students will view as email (rather than opening the Announcement in bCourses", make sure to state that they should click "view announcement" to view the full message in their web browser.
Embedding Video from Sources other than Kaltura
Kaltura is our recommended platform for sharing video in bCourses. If you wish to embed content from alternate sources, see below:
In order to complete the steps below, you will need to have "embed code" for the video. If your video is stored in YouTube, or bDrive, follow the appropriate instructions:
- bDrive instructions: How do I get an embed code for video stored in bDrive?
- YouTube instructions: Embed videos & playlists
If it is stored elsewhere, you will need to determine how to get the embed code from that environment before you proceed with the following instructions.
The instructions in this article tell you how to create a new Page on which you embed your video, but you can follow the same instructions (starting with step 2) if you have created (or are editing) any item that provides the Rich Content Editor (Assignment, Announcement, Discussion Post, etc.)
1. From the course navigation menu, select Pages [1], and then the blue "+ Page" button towards the top right corner of the screen [2]. 2. Enter a title [1] (if the item doesn't already have one), and then click on the link "HTML Editor" link [2]. This will switch the Rich Content Editor (which allows you to format text and media) to the HTML Editor, which is where you can put raw HTML code, such as an embed code. 3. Paste the embed code, and scroll down to and click Save & Publish, or Save (if you are not yet ready for students to see the Page), or whatever the available button is in the tool for saving your work (e.g. it may be "Update" or something similar). |
Once you have published the Page (or saved in another bCourses tool in which you have embedded the video), everyone will be able to play the video directly within bCourses. |
Important Accessibility Information Instructors are encouraged to reference accesscontent.berkeley.edu for best practices and resources for making course content accessible. In particular, you should refer to http://accesscontent.berkeley.edu/resources/help-guides/video-captions-transcripts and http://accesscontent.berkeley.edu/resources/help-guides/adding-descriptive-audio to ensure that your content will be accessible to all students who may be in your course (now and into the future). Keep in mind that it is harder and more expensive to make content accessible after-the-fact. Also, know that you are required to ensure your content is accessible if it will be made available to the public or if you have been notified by DSP that student accommodation is required. |
