If you find yourself unable to perform the following actions on a Kaltura video that another user owns:

This is because you do not have privileged collaborator permissions on the video. For more information on collaborator roles and permissions, see How do I add collaborators or change the owner of my Kaltura media?

For privacy and security purposes, Kaltura support staff can not change collaborator permissions on Kaltura media without the explicit permission of the media owners/course instructors.

You have multiple options for requesting consent to gain privileged permissions on these videos, based on the status of the instructor and whether or not the video was recorded through Course Capture.

For Course Capture Videos

If you have a way to contract the instructor(s) and they are still at UC Berkeley

Please ask the instructor to make a copy of the Course Capture video and add you as a collaborator on the copy following in the instructions in How do I add collaborators or change the owner of my Kaltura media?

It is necessary to create a copy of a Course Capture video and share the copy rather than the original video. This is because when you participate in Course Capture, you do not have ownership of your videos (The Course Capture service has ownership). This limits what you are able to do with the recordings, including the ability to add Co-Viewers and other collaborators to your media. You must create a copy to become the owner of your video and thus be able to gain full control over your video.

If you have a way to contact the instructor(s) and they are no longer at UC Berkeley

Kaltura support staff policy is that all instructors in Teaching roles in the course are required to consent for us to change collaborator permissions or ownership on Course Capture videos. Feel free to email kalturahelp@berkeley.edu if you need the list of instructors for a particular course.

Please ask all instructors in Teaching roles for the course to send an email to kalturahelp@berkeley.edu. Ask them to include:

  1. Your name (You being the person requesting privileged permissions on the video)
  2. Some way to identify the video(s) they want to give you access to (Direct links or course name and video title(s))
  3. What role they would like to grant you on their video. See How do I add collaborators or change the owner of my Kaltura media? for more information on what the different roles and permissions are.

If you do not have a way to contact the instructor(s)

Please see the "Access WITHOUT consent" section on the Access to Electronic Communications page of the Office of Ethics website.

You will find a link to a form that you can submit to formally request non-consensual access to the instructor's content.

For non-Course Capture videos

If you have a way to contact the media owner and they are still at UC Berkeley

Please ask the media owner to change your collaborator permissions following the instructions in How do I add collaborators or change the owner of my Kaltura media?
