How to Get and Use CalNet 2-Step Bypass Codes

How to Get Bypass Codes

There are two primary ways to obtain bypass codes: using the Duo Mobile app or CalNet Account Manager.

Method 1: Using Duo Mobile

Open your Duo Mobile App. Tap "CalNet - UC Berkeley" and a single-use passcode will display.

Did you know? You can use a passcode from the Duo App to complete the 2-Step on your smartphone from anywhere in the world — even if you do not have a Wi-Fi or cellular connection!

Method 2: Using CalNet Account Manager (mycalnet.berkeley.edu)

This method requires that you are able to perform a 2-Step using a passcode or other verification device.

  1. Log in to mycalnet.berkeley.edu using your CalNet ID and passphrase. Select "Manage 2-Step Verification" on the left-hand menu.
  2. Complete a 2-Step authentication (this is required to manage your 2-Step account even if you already completed a 2-Step to log in).
  3. Click on "Renew (or Generate) Bypass Codes." This will void any existing set of codes and generate a new set of 10 codes. Each passcode can only be used one time.
  4. Be sure to Print the codes and keep them in a safe place. We recommend putting half in your wallet and half in an alternative safe location that you can access while traveling.

Logging in with a Passcode

To use bypass codes to authenticate, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your CalNet account with your usual credentials.
  2. When the Duo 2-Step screen appears, select "Other Options" at the bottom.
  3. Select "Bypass code" from the list of verification methods.
  4. Enter your 6-digit code and click Verify.
