How do I restrict viewing of a Kaltura video to only certain students?

A knowledge base article about How do I restrict viewing of a Kaltura video to only certain students? provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal

You have multiple options for sharing Kaltura videos with only certain students.

Please note that you will only have permission to do the steps below if you are the Owner of the video. If your videos are coming from Berkeley Course Capture service, you are not the Owner, so these steps won't work.

If you are trying to share a Kaltura video that was recorded through the Course Capture service, please follow the instructions in How do I restrict viewing of a Course Capture video to only certain students?

Option 1: Sharing a Kaltura video to a student's My Media

You can allow certain students to view your video in their own My Media by making them Co-Viewers on the media.

How to share a Kaltura video to a student's My Media

Following the instructions in How do I add collaborators in bCourses and MediaSpace?, grant your student(s) the Co-Viewer role for your video.

If you do not see the Collaborators tab in the Edit page for your video, your video may be a Course Capture video; please see the note at the top of the article.

Students with a Co-Viewer role will now be able to view your Kaltura video in their own My Media.

Option 2: Sharing a Kaltura video through an Assignment

You can also share your Kaltura video with only certain students by embedding your video in an assignment that you assign to only those student(s). This method is recommended if you would like your student(s) to respond to your video in an assignment, although it may also be appropriate even if you don't need them to respond.

Also, this method is recommended if you are sharing the video with a section of students, as you can share the video with all of the students in the section at once rather than manually sharing it with each of them (as you would have to do if you were adding them as Co-Viewers).

How to share a Kaltura video with certain students or sections via an assignment

  1. Go to your bCourses site and follow the instructions in How do I assign an assignment to an individual student? or How do I assign an assignment to a course section? until you reach the "Add Assignment Details" step.
  2. From here, embed the video you wish to share in the Assignment Details by following the instructions in How do I embed Kaltura media in bCourses using the Rich Content Editor?
  3. Unless you want students to submit something that you will grade, you will want to set "Display Grade as" to "Not Graded."
  4. Go back to How do I assign an assignment to an individual student? or How do I assign an assignment to a course section? and follow the rest of the instructions to publish your assignment (and Kaltura video) to only certain students or certain sections.

Option 3: Sharing Kaltura videos on a bCourses Project Site

You can share videos using a bCourses Project Site that you only add specific students to.

This setup works particularly well if you would like to regularly share Kaltura videos with a group of specific students, as you can simply add new videos to the project site's Media Gallery in order to share them with the same group of students.

  1. Follow the instructions in How do I create a Project Site? to set up your project site.
  2. Follow the instructions in How do I add users to my course site? to add your students to the site.
  3. Your students should see the project site on their bCourses courses list. You can also send them the link to the site to remind them where to find the videos.
  4. You may publish media to your new project site's Media Gallery following the instructions in How do I publish media from My Media to a Media Gallery in bCourses?. These videos will only be shared with students added to the project site.
