A knowledge base article about Which type of phone line, analog or digital, best serves my needs? provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal
An analog line and phone is like the home phone. It's a single line phone set. A professor usually has an analog phone. A digital line has multiple lines that carry multiple dial-tones. If you are responsible for answering multiple phones, for example, covering a colleague's incoming calls while he or she is at lunch, you will want to order a digital phone.
Phone models come with different features. A digital set has feature buttons to activate/deactivate while an analog set has you enter in a two digit code to activate/deactivate features. Analog phones have fewer features and cost less. Digital phones have more features but cost more.
In addition to the phone and line matching the phone and line must work with the building type, i.e. a Centrex or PBX building. Click here for a list of UCB-supported Centrex phone models. Click here for a list of UCB-supported PBX phone models.
