Overview

When a person no longer has any active connections with UC Berkeley, their CalNet ID expires. However, our system keeps their ID information for a specific period, known as the grace period, based on their previous affiliation with UC Berkeley. Once this grace period ends, a person without active affiliations can no longer log into their CalNet account.

If you receive a notice that your account is in grace and you think it's a mistake, contact the appropriate department to verify and update your affiliation status:

• Faculty, Staff, and Affiliates, including Visiting Scholars and Postdocs: contact your Human Resources representative or visit Berkeley Regional Services.
• Enrolled students: visit Cal Student Central
• Alums: open a ticket in our IT Service Hub

Email Notifications

The grace period is based on the end date in our campus system of record. If your end date is after this period, you won't receive emails, and your account will be expired. The first email is sent as soon as you enter grace. Then emails are sent at these intervals:

• 2 months before expiration
• 1 month before expiration
• 2 weeks before expiration
• 1 week before expiration

Access to Campus Systems While in Grace

When a person's CalNet account expires, they lose access to most campus services. Some services, like VPN, are not available during the grace period. However, other services remain accessible to help users transition away from campus services. For instance, during the grace period, employees can access their UC Berkeley email, and students can check their final grades or save documents to campus file storage.

The grace period starts the day all of your campus affiliations end, according to data from the Human Resources (HCM) and Student (SIS) systems.

During the grace period, the following services remain available:

• bConnected
• CalCentral
• bCourses

bMail Account Eligibility

Your UC Berkeley bConnected Google account will be disabled after your grace period ends. To keep your data, you must take action before this date. CalNet 2-Step is required for all active CalNet accounts. Find out more about 2-Step.

Can You Keep Your Account?

• Retiring Faculty and Staff: You can keep your account. Contact the UC Berkeley Retirement Center to set this up.
• Graduating Students: You might be able to keep your account. Check your eligibility on the Alumni Email Changes page.

Everyone Else Leaving the University: You will lose access once your grace period expires, unless your official campus status is updated before. Visit "Leaving UC Berkeley" for information on managing bConnected Google accounts when departing from the university.
