A knowledge base article about View Cable Connection Data provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal
The Telecom Catalog system maintains a database of all IST-managed cables installed on campus. From TelCat (https://ucb.service-now.com), you can view the cables, their location information, and see whether they are unconnected or connected to a network switch port. This information is helpful if you are trying to obtain an inventory of cables installed in your location, verify the status of a cable in a location, or find if there are unconnected cables that are available for use.
How to view network connection (cable) information in TelCat:
1. In the left navigation bar, type in 'Cables'. ‘Cables’ is listed under the ‘Manage My Dept’s Services’ category. Click on the ‘Cables’ listing:
2. The resulting list will show all installed data and voice cables on campus.
3. The following fields are displayed:
|
Field display |
Description |
|
Name |
Full Cable ID. Begins with Building Code. Note that a physical cable label may not always display the Building Code. |
|
Switch Port |
interface on a switch device to which a cable is connected |
|
Cable Status (values shown at right) |
Active: connected to switch port, port is ‘up’. |
|
Inactive: connected to switch port, port is ‘down’; cable may be activated.
|
Unconnected: not connected to switch port, cable is available for use and may be activated.
|
Bad: cable unusable. | |
|
Station Building |
Name of building where cable is to be used. |
|
Building Code |
Campus Building Code that maps to Station Building. |
|

4. You can use TelCat sort options on any of the above fields to view the data you need.
Sort the list by any column by clicking on the column name or click the 3-bar icon to the left of a column header and select the desired sort.
There are various ways to filter the data. You can use the search box under each column to search for certain values or strings. If the search box is not displayed, click on the magnifying glass symbol on the column header line. For example, if you wanted to find all Unconnected cables in VLSB, room 1001, you could enter search strings with wildcards to obtain the view you want. You would enter ‘=VLSB’ and ‘=Unconnected’ to get exact matches in those columns. If you enter ‘1001’ (without first typing in the ‘=’) you will get a match on cables where the Station room number starts with ‘1001’, but your list will also show cables in room ‘1001A, ‘1001B’, etc.
You can find more information about the wildcard search options in KBT0012505.
You can also filter out entries by placing your mouse on a field value, right-clicking, then selecting either ‘show matching’ to see all entries that match the value, or ‘filter out’ to exclude all entries that match the value. In the example below, you can choose to either view ('Show Matching') or exclude ('Filter Out') entries where Station Building = ‘Kroeber’:
5. Using the the right-click on a column header, you can also export the data to an excel, .csv, or pdf format.
6. If you would like to activate an inactive or unconnected cable, move an existing connection from one subnet to another, or disconnect/de-activate a connection, go to the TelCat Service Catalog to submit the appropriate service request:
7. If you find discrepancies in the cable data (e.g., a cable is listed as being in one room, but actually exists in a different room), you can open an incident management ticket to report the problem. To open a ticket, go to https://hr.berkeley.edu/campus-shared-services, email itcsshelp@berkeley.edu, or call 510-664-9000, option 1, 3, 2.
