ServiceNow auto-creation of Incidents and bMail automatic forwarding change Nov 14, 2023

In March 2023, EVCP Ben Hermalin sent out a campus message regarding forwarding email off the Berkeley email system, including a caution about not automatically forwarding Berkeley email to other email accounts that may not have the same contractual data and privacy protections in place as UC Berkeley does. As of November 14, 2023, the bMail team is moving forward to the next stage of this project, which is disabling the ability for people to automatically forward their email to another account.

Some of our ServiceNow customers forward an email address (usually associated with a Special Purpose Account) to one of the ServiceNow instances which then automatically creates an incident.  The ServiceNow team has partnered with the bMail team to continue this service.  The campus message above does not apply to email addresses that forward Berkeley email to a Berkeley ServiceNow instance.

Moving forward, employees (including student employees) who want to use the automatic forwarding feature will need to request an exception in order to have it activated on their account. Email domains that will be approved for email forwarding include other @berkeley.edu accounts, other UC Campuses, or affiliated labs, including the ServiceNow instances.
