Portal reflects Lived Name starting Oct 20, 2022

We are pleased to announce that on October 20, 2022, Portal.berkeley.edu will reflect the Lived Name, not the Legal Name for all employees, based on their UCPath record. If you have not specifically identified/entered a Lived Name in UCPath, your Legal Name will automatically become your Lived Name.

What is Lived Name?

The Gender Recognition and Lived Name (GRLN) policy ensures that all students, employees, alumni, and affiliates are identified by their accurate gender identity and lived name on university-issued identification documents and in UC’s information systems, and provides guidance on the collection and reporting of gender identity, lived name and sexual orientation.

How will this change impact me?

On October 20, the Portal People Cards will reflect the Lived Name from UCPath.

For example:

Searching will not change on October 20.  When using the People Search option to search for a person, it searches the name fields in the Campus Directory (which can include a Legal Name and a Lived Name).

If you have trouble finding a person in Portal, in addition to searching by name, you can search by email address, employee ID (except for affiliates), or the Berkeley public Unique ID (UID).

We understand that this may cause some adjustment in how you see people’s names reflected during the transition, but it is an important step to represent the shared values of our Berkeley community.

You can manage your Lived Name in many of the campus systems yourself.
