A knowledge base article about Mathematica License Types - Single User v. Network provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal
There are two Mathematica license types: Single User licenses and Network Licenses
As the name suggests, Single User licenses should be applied to Mathematica software installed on computers that are exclusively or primarily used by one individual. The devices may be university-owned or personally-owned.
Network licenses, also referred to as concurrent licenses, are recommended for use in shared-use environments where computers are accessed by more than one person e.g. research/instruction labs and classrooms. Network licensed Mathematica software requires network access to a server running MathLM software.
Departments wishing to use Network licenses have the option of using the Central Mathematica License Server maintained by the Mathematics Department or installing the license management software, MathLM, and maintaining their own departmental server.
To access Mathematica Networked Licenses using the Central License Server:
Contact request@math.berkeley.edu to request access to the Math Dept's Mathematica License Server and provide the e-mail acknowledgement from Wolfram. The Math Dept. will reply with the client license file.
To install and run your own License Server:
The activation key will be displayed and an e-mail with a link to the download site will be sent. Download the MathLM Mathematica License Manager software and use the links on the Download site to learn more about installing and activating MathLM.
