How can I use the transcript of a Kaltura video?

A knowledge base article about How can I use the transcript of a Kaltura video? provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal

Kaltura generates captions and a transcript for all media content added to the system.

How do I view the transcript of a Kaltura video?

  1. Navigate to the video in bCourses. The video should either be in your My Media (which you can access in the global navigation—vertical navigation bar on the left—of bCourses), in a course Media Gallery, or embedded in context within bCourses.
  2. Click the Play button in the middle of the video to load the video Player.
  3. At the top right of the player, click Show transcript.
    • If you do not see Show transcript, the transcript is unavailable for that video, so unfortunately you will not be able to use this feature at this time (If the video has just been uploaded, the transcript may not be ready just yet; you may want to check back later. And, occasionally, the system fails to create a transcript; if you believe a transcript is missing, send email to kalturahelp@berkeley.edu with the url where you found the video and the name of the video.)

  4.  If you have the transcript open while the video is playing, the text corresponding to the current captions being shown will be highlighted in the transcript. The highlight may be a bit ahead of the captions. You may click anywhere in the transcript to go to that point, as described in more detail in the next section.

How do I use the transcript to jump to where certain words are spoken?

For videos in a Media Gallery or My Media

  1. Navigate to the video entry page. Scroll down and click on the magnifying glass below the video’s title. Screenshot of the magnifying glass icon beneath the video title highlighted.
  2. A search bar will appear. Type the keyword you are looking for in the search bar to get a list of timestamps of when that word was in the transcript.Screenshot of the transcript search results.
  3. Click on one of the timestamp links to jump to the timestamp in the video.

For any video, including those embedded in context

  1. Open the transcript (as described in the first section of this article).
  2. Use the search tool bar to find your keyword(s).

  3. Once you have found the word(s), simply click on the text to jump to that section in the video.
