Is my phone line eligible for Voice-over-IP (VoIP)?

A knowledge base article about Is my phone line eligible for Voice-over-IP (VoIP)? provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal

Not every phone line is eligible for Voice-over-IP (VoIP).  Here are some examples:

  1. Credit cards and PCI compliance.  If you verbally speak your credit card over the phone, or if your caller tells you their credit card over the phone, or if this phone line is attached to a credit card machine, then you cannot use VoIP because it would not be within PCI compliance.
  2. If your phone line is on a call router or is an announcement-only line, then your phone line is not eligible for VoIP.   Contact CNS about ACD lines.
  3. If this phone line is for an emergency line, alarm line, Blue Phone, or red phone, then this phone line is not eligible for VoIP.
  4. VoIP does not work with the Avaya analog phone service.
  5. VoIP is not available on Centrex lines.
  6. Avaya Workplace is available only on phones associated with an individual - it is not available on departmental or shared lines.

IMPORTANT 911 NOTE: Do not use Avaya Workplace Desktop to place 911 calls as the system cannot identify your physical location on an internet device.
