A knowledge base article about I just received a notice that my IST managed Windows server is ready. What is a shadow session? provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal
Shadow sessions are a way to provide managed Windows customers with local administrative rights on their VPS. Both you and a systems administrator (SA) remote desktop into a management server. The SA will then request to join your remote session and log into your server using their administrative credentials. You share both mouse and keyboard controls with the SA, so once you’re logged into your server you can perform any installation, configuration, or maintenance work you want.
Information on how to configure your RDP client for a shadow session can be found at https://calshare.berkeley.edu/sites/platformservices/WindowsTeam/Customers/HowTo/How_to_use_a_gateway_for_RDP.docx?Web=1
