Managing Google Group Managers in CalGroups

When you sync a CalGroups group to Google Groups, by default, all members of your folder’s Admin group will automatically appear in Google Groups as managers. This occurs because the Admin group associated with your Org or App folder is automatically granted administrative privileges to all sub-groups and sub-folders created within that folder.

If you want to be the only manager in the synced Google group while preserving the membership of your primary Admin group, we recommend creating a separate admin group with only yourself as a member. You can then grant that specific group administrative privileges to the sub-folder where your groups reside.

How to Create a Sub-folder with a Dedicated Admin Group

Example Scenario:

Implementation Steps:

  1. Under your primary folder (e.g., DEPT), create a new sub-folder (e.g., DEPT-Sub).
  2. Inside that sub-folder, create a new admin group (e.g., DEPT-Sub-Admin) and add yourself as a member.
  3. In the permissions for the sub-folder, grant admin privileges to the new DEPT-Sub-Admin group.
  4. Crucial Step: Remove the privileges for the parent DEPT-Admin group from the sub-folder. This prevents members of the parent group from syncing to Google as managers.
  5. Create your target groups within this sub-folder.

Pro-Tip: If you are creating groups for others and do not want to appear as a manager in Google yourself, follow the steps above to create the groups. When finished, remove yourself from the sub-folder's admin group (DEPT-Sub-Admin). Note that you will no longer see the groups you created; if you need to make future changes, you must add yourself back to the sub-admin group first.
