How to set up Face ID security on your cell phone

A knowledge base article about How to set up Face ID security on your cell phone provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal

To setup Face ID on an Android Device:

  1. Go to the Settings button.
  2. Select Security (or Biometrics and Security on older models)
  3. Select Face Recognition or Face Unlock
  4. Enter passcode (if prompted)
  5. Click Continue
  6. Follow on-screen instructions for face scanning
  7. Select OK

Once the face scan is accepted, your device will automatically unlock when you look at the screen, but only if the device recognizes your face. Appearance changes such as heavy makeup or glasses can cause Face ID to not work properly.

On an iPhone device, for extra security, you can also enable the feature that erases all data on the device after 10 failed passcode attempts. This option isn’t a good fit for everyone; please consider carefully before enabling it:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Scroll to Face/Touch ID and passcode
  3. Scroll to the bottom and enable Erase Data
  4. On the iPhone/iPad this will erase your data after 10 failed password attempts.
