Important Policy Note
Employees (including student employees) are not permitted to use SMS text messages for CalNet 2-Step authentication. Please use the Duo Mobile app, a tablet, or a security key instead.
Basic cell phone enrollment is intended for students who do not have a smartphone.
Preparation
Before you begin:
- Keep your charged cell phone nearby
- Use a desktop or laptop computer to perform the enrollment
- Navigate to the Duo Device Management Portal via mycalnet.berkeley.edu
Enrolling Your Phone
- Log in to mycalnet.berkeley.edu with your CalNet ID and passphrase
- Select Manage 2-Step Verification
- Choose Duo Device Manager and authenticate to proceed
- Select Add a New Device once inside the Duo portal
- Choose Phone Number from the list of options
- Enter your phone number including the area code
- Confirm ownership by selecting Send me a passcode
- Type the 6-digit passcode received via text into the verification box
- Click Continue to complete the link
How to Use Text Passcodes
To authenticate using your basic cell phone:
- Log in to a campus system as usual
- Select Other options on the 2-Step prompt screen
- Select Text message passcode from the list
- Check your phone for a new text message containing a passcode
- Type the 6-digit passcode into the login screen
- Click Verify
Usage Notes
Text passcodes are single-use only. Every time you log in, you must request a new code. If you are traveling or have poor cellular reception, consider using Passcodes printed in advance from the CalNet Account Manager.
