 How to Add Cal Directory Contacts (LDAP configuration)

Many modern email client applications are LDAP-enabled and can be configured to connect directly to the CalNet Directory Service, this allows quick and easy searches for directory information of people associated with the campus.

To configure any LDAP-enabled email client application to connect directly to the CalNet Directory, only a few configuration parameters are required:

CalNet Directory Configuration Settings

SERVER NAME:

ldap.berkeley.edu

STANDARD PORT:

389

SECURE PORT (SSL):

636

SEARCH BASE:

ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu

WORD-WISE SEARCH FILTER:

(cn=^0

Instructions for Outlook 2010:

  1. On the File/Info panel, click Account Settings... under the Account Settings button menu.
  2. On the Address Books tab, select New...
  3. Select the Internet Directory Service (LDAP) option and click the Next > button.
  4. Under the Server Information portion of the dialog box, enter ldap.berkeley.edu in the field labeled Server Name: and click the "More Settings..." button.
  5. Under the Display Name portion of the dialog box, enter CalNet Directory in the field provided.
  6. Under the Connection Details portion of the dialog box, make sure that field labeled Port is set to 389.
  7. Click on the Search tab at the top of the current dialog box and under the Search Base portion of the dialog box, select the Custom option and enter ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu in the field.
  8. Click the OK button.
  9. Click the Next > button.
  10. Click the Finish button.

Instructions for Address Book in MacOS 10.7-10.8:

  1. Open the OS-X Address book. (in the Applications folder)
  2. From the "Address Book" drop-down menu, select Preferences...#Click the LDAP tab, and then click the "Add" button.
  3. Enter the following information in the Name, Server, and Search Base boxes:
    • Name: UC Berkeley Directory
    • Server: ldap.berkeley.edu
    • Search Base: ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu
  4. Click Save and close the Preferences window.

 

Instructions for Contacts App in MacOS 10.9-10.10:

1. Go to Settings>Internet Accounts

2. Click Add Other Account, select Add an LDAP account and click Create...

3. Enter the following search and server settings:

Instructions for Thunderbird 3.x:

  1. Select the Edit/Preferences or equivalent menu.
  2. Select the Addressing tab under Composition
  3. Click the Edit Directories button
  4. Click the Add button, then enter the following information in the General tab fields:
  1. Click OK to save the properties
  2. Check Directory Server and select CalNet Directory from the list
  3. Click Close to save your configuration. 

Instructions for Android:

On home page, navigate to Settings.

  1. Select Applications
  2. Select Contacts
  3. Select Accounts, Click on + Add account
  4. Select LADP
  5. Enter server ldap.berkeley.edu. Skip Username and Password.
  6. Select Anonymous (this will set the port to 389 automatically). Click VERIFY

Instructions for iOS Devices:

  1. Go to Settings, select Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  2. Under Accounts, select Add Account
  3. Select Other
  4. Under Contacts, select Add LDAP Account
  5. Enter ldap.berkeley.edu in the Server Field, leave username and password blank, description is optional. Click Next.
  6. Under Search Settings select Berkeley,edu
  7. Select Base and enter the following: ou=people,dc=berkeley,dc=edu
  8. Click on the top left arrow to get back to main LDAP setting and click Save.  SSL is the default.
