Overview and Security Policies

LastPass Premium is a personal password manager for UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff. Credentials stored in LastPass cannot be accessed by vendors, software providers, UC Berkeley, ISO, or CalNet.

• Use a personal, non-berkeley.edu email address as your primary LastPass ID to ensure you keep your account if you leave the university.
• Please be aware that support is provided by LastPass directly, not by UC Berkeley. Visit the LastPass Support Center for help.

Convert an Existing LastPass Account

If you have an existing Free account, follow these steps. (Note: Family Plan subscribers cannot convert to Premium).

• Change your existing account email to a non-berkeley.edu address first if it currently uses your campus email.
• Navigate to the LastPass Partner Page.
• Enter your @berkeley.edu email and your personal email affiliated with the account.
• Click the Upgrade my account link in the confirmation email sent to your @berkeley.edu address.
• Scroll to the "Already have an account?" section on the activation page and Log in.
• Click Confirm on the Redeem LastPass Premium webpage.
• Turn off auto-renewal if you previously had a paid personal Premium account.

Create a New LastPass Premium Account

• Go to the Partner Page to claim your free account.
• Enter your @berkeley.edu email and the non-berkeley personal email you wish to use.
• Click the Create my account link in the confirmation email.
• Verify that your personal email is auto-populated in the setup field.
• Create your Main Password and optional Password Hint.
• Click Create My Account to finish.

Main Password Guidelines

Your Main Password is the only way to access your vault. Neither UC Berkeley nor LastPass can reset it.

• Aim for at least 20 characters (a passphrase like OursturdyGoldenBearIswatchingfromtheskies is recommended).
• Do not use your CalNet passphrase or your email address.
• Your Password should not be guessable

Account Recovery Options

To prevent total data loss if you forget your Main Password, you must set up recovery options immediately:

• Set up SMS recovery and mobile account recovery via the LastPass app.
• Review the LastPass Recovery Guide for all available options.

Install Browser Extensions and Mobile App

• Download extensions for every browser you use (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) from the LastPass Download page.
• Install the mobile app on your smartphone or tablet (iOS, Android, Windows Mobile).
• Log in to the extension or app using your personal email and Main Password to sync your vault.

Adding Passwords to your Vault

• Open your vault by clicking the LastPass icon in your browser and selecting Open my Vault.
• Click Add Site and fill in the URL, Name, Username, and Password.
• Practice by adding your CalNet account (URL: auth.berkeley.edu).
• Save the entry to allow LastPass to auto-populate your credentials in the future.

Protect Your Account with MFA

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is highly recommended. Note: You cannot use your campus 2-Step (Duo) account with LastPass.

• Sign up for a separate, free personal Duo account (set "Organization" to "self").
• Configure your LastPass account to link with this personal Duo account.
• Contact Duo directly for any help with personal MFA accounts.
