How do I install LastPass browser extensions?

A knowledge base article about How do I install LastPass browser extensions? provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal

UC Berkeley offers Free LastPass Premium to all Students, Staff, and Faculty. LastPass is a password management tool that securely manages your passwords in an online vault.

Support for LastPass is offered directly by LastPass. CalNet Support CANNOT assist you if you have forgotten your Master Password. Because of this, we heavily recommend that you set up as many account recovery options (link is external) as possible in order to prevent losing access to your saved information.

Before getting started, please review the quickstart instructions at calnet: https://calnet.berkeley.edu/calnet-me/lastpass-premium/lastpass-premium-quick-start

Installing Browser Extensions

Please follow the installation instructions available from the LastPass website: https://support.lastpass.com/help/get-started-with-the-lastpass-web-browser-extension-lp010095. To get the Safari extension for MacOS you must install the LastPass App. See below for special instructions for installing without an administrator account.

Also be sure to disable your browser’s built in password manager to prevent interfering with LastPass functionality.

Disable Chrome Password Management
Disable Firefox Password Management

Please note that for all browser extensions, there is no default logout time. We highly recommend setting a logout time of no more than 10 minutes. Please follow instructions to manage your automatic log out settings here: https://support.lastpass.com/help/manage-automatic-log-out

Installing the MacOS App/Safari Extension on MacOS without an administrator account

NOTE: Installing the MacOS App/Safari Extension without an administrator account will disable some LastPass App features (including Quick Search), but the Safari Extension will work normally.  If you have a Berkeley Desktop and would like access to all LastPass features, please call IT Client Services at 510-664-9000, option 1, to request a full installation.

  1. Make sure your default browser is set to Safari. If it’s not, temporarily switch it to Safari by going to System Preferences -> General -> Default web browser -> choose Safari from the drop down menu.
  2. Go to https://lastpass.com/misc_download2.php and choose ‘LastPass for Safari’.
  3. Run the downloaded file (LastPass.dmg) but do NOT drag the LastPass icon into the Applications folder shown in the Installer window.Do not install LastPass application to system Application folder
  4. Navigate to your local applications folder by going to Finder and pressing CMD+Shift+H.
  5. If you do not see an Applications folder here, Right click->New Folder->name the folder Applications->Open the folder.
  6. Drag the LastPass icon from the LastPass Installer window into your local applications folder.
  7. Double click on the LastPass icon that is now in your local applications folder, and choose ‘Open’ on the dialog that appears stating that LastPass is an app downloaded from the Internet.
  8. You may be prompted to Open Safari from the menu bar to enable the Safari extension. Click No if you do not want to enable the extension, otherwise click Open Safari and follow steps 11 and 12.
  9. Log in to LastPass using your LastPass credentials.
  10. You may receive a message that "LastPass.app would like to receive keystrokes from any application." Please click Deny. (This will disable some LastPass App features, including Quick Search, but the Safari Extension will work normally.)
  11. You also may be prompted to enable the Safari Extension once you’ve logged in. If so, click Open Safari.
  12. Enable the Safari Extension by checking the box next to LastPass (manually accessible via Safari->Safari Preferences->Extensions Tab).
  13. Click on Turn On from the extension notification.
  14. Be aware that by default the Safari browser extension stays logged in. We recommend setting a desired log out time for browser extensions. We recommend having your LastPass extensions log out after no more than 10 minutes.

  16. If you’re using the Safari extension, it is recommended to disable autofill options to prevent interfering with LastPass functionality. To do so, Click the Safari menu and choose Preferences.
  17. Click the AutoFill icon.
  18. Turn off all the AutoFill settings: “Using info from my contacts,” “User names and passwords,” “Credit cards,” and “Other forms.”
