Lived Name FAQs

How will the preferred name be made available to UC Berkeley applications?

The UCPath preferred name will be pulled into the Berkeley Identity Management System and written to the same name fields in downstream systems as they are today. Specifically Active Directory and CalNet LDAP will reflect the UCPath preferred name for staff, faculty, and affiliates after June 20th. If you are a campus technologist, your application should continue using the displayName field for the full preferred name as well as givenName, and sn for first name and last name fields respectively.

What happens if I do not add a preferred name to UCPath?

The UCPath legal name is going to get copied into the UCPath preferred name if a preferred name is not set by the end of June 15th. UCPath legal names will then get sent to campus, where they will display in campus systems as preferred name.

If my application requires the legal name and not a preferred name, how do I request that?

Applications needing full access to legal names should contact API Central.  Developers are required to request legal names as a separate process.

Will legal names be available in the Berkeley Identity Management System or LDAP, or Active Directory?

No, specific fields for legal names will not be available for this.  Legal name is not currently available in LDAP and will not be made available after the Lived Name changes.

Will UCPath's preferred name include middle initials?

Yes. By default UCPath will copy middle initials (or full middle name) from legal name into preferred name unless the individual sets their own preferred name.  The middle initials will be included in the preferred name (displayName) in UC Berkeley systems.

Will UCPath's preferred name include honorifics?

No, unless the honorific is typed in as part of First name or Last name in UCPath.

Will UCPath's preferred name include salutations?

Not currently.  There is a prefix drop-down in the UCPath user interface but there are no options for selection.  It’s not known for sure if these drop-downs will change on June 20th.

Will UCPath's preferred name include generationals?

Not currently.  UCpath allows the selection of a suffix which includes generationals; however it is unknown if these are supported for preferred names.

How long will it take UC Berkeley systems to see my preferred name after I update it in UCPath?

It can take up to 48 hours for all systems to reflect the change.
