Google Groups mailing lists that do not accept Public (non *.berkeley.edu) emails

A knowledge base article about Google Groups mailing lists that do not accept Public (non *.berkeley.edu) emails provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal

If a Google Group mailing list is listed as a Contact on a service request, or is added as a 'CC:' on email, email from the TelCat system will be able to reach that mailing list only if the list has been configured to accept Public emails.  If the list is configured to accept only emails from *.berkeley.edu addresses, the TelCat email will be rejected.  For example, if you send an email request for Hostmaster service and you include  a Google Group in either the 'To:' or 'cc:' line, TelCat will reply back to the sender and the listed contacts.  If the Google Group only accepts incoming mail from *.berkeley.edu addresses, the TelCat reply will be rejected.

If email is rejected, a separate email from will be sent to the original requestor to notify him/her of this situation.

These are the steps you can take to fix the problem:

  1.  Verify that the name of the mailing list you entered is correct.
  2. If the name is correct, forward the email to the mailing list directly from your berkeley.edu address so that the mailing list members receive a copy of the original reply.
  3. To prevent this situation from occurring in future:  check with the owner of the mailing list to see if the list can be made Public. For information about setting the permissions for who can post to a Google Group, see: Who can post to a bConnected List?
  4. If the owner of the mailing list does not want to make the list 'Public', remove the mailing list as a RITM contact. Add the individual email addresses of the recipients you wish to include as RITM contacts.
