Custom Naming Benefits

A knowledge base article about Custom Naming Benefits provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal

A great service that is offered in the Telecom Catalog is Custom Naming. This service allows you to distinctly name lines that are important to your department, identified by location, use or ownership. By using the Custom Naming configuration it will help you prevent erroneous disconnects which can result in reconnection fees and voice line labor (technician) fees. Listed below are examples of Custom Named lines:

  1. Front Desk
  2. Programmer Cubicle
  3. Back Door Buzzer
  4. Fish Tank Alarm
  5. Crisis Lines

This also helps your administrative contact identify important lines when determining which lines to disconnect.

Changing an Existing Name:

You can view the information below that will help you change any lines that your department would like to update with the Custom Naming feature.

See KBT0013348 to change an existing name to a custom name and if needed, change the voicemail and phone display.

Adding a New service:

You can also use this feature when you are adding a new line.

See KBT0013335 for how to add a new service with custom name

Examples of when you might use a custom name:

1) Let’s say you have a special lab that has two alarm lines:  one alarm for the fish tank and one alarm for the door. In the Telecom Catalog system you can see that the line type is ‘alarm line’ and you can see that both are in the building/room of the lab.  Additionally, you can set up a custom name to indicate which line is for the fish tank and which is for the door.

2) When a person leaves the department you can rename the line to ‘vacant’ so you can track which lines are in use and which are not in use.

Have fun renaming your services.  If you have any questions, please contact Telecom Support Services at telecom@berkeley.edu or calling 510-664-9000 options 1-3-1.
