In Windows 7, 8 and 10, Microsoft has implemented a feature called Previous Versions that automatically backs up previous iterations of files & folders, allowing you to easily restore a corrupted or previous version of a file.

Before you begin:

Note that this feature must be enabled on the local machine or network server where a file resides.
This feature applies only to locally stored files & folders.
- Files and folders located on Network Drives or Cloud storage will not have this functionality available.

To restore the previoius version of a file or folder:

Right click a file or folder.
Locate and click on the Previous Versions tab.
Select the desired version that should be restored and select a restore option:
- Open: opens the previous file or folder.
- Copy: copies the previous version of the file or folder to the clipboard.
- Restore: overwrites the current file or folder with the selected previous version.
