What is a virtual machine (VM) clone and when would having one be useful?

A knowledge base article about What is a virtual machine (VM) clone and when would having one be useful? provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal

A VM clone is an exact copy of a VM from a particular point in time.  They can be useful if you have to provision more than one server running the same application.

Example - You have four terminal servers running the exact same software.  Rather than installing and configuring your software on each server you can do it on one and then clone the VM to create the other three VM's.

Please note that not all applications are clone friendly.  Your mileage may vary when using VM clones in the way described in the above example.  Check with your application's support team for cloning capability prior to requesting a clone.

Some minor changes (IP address, Active Directory account name, etc.) must be made on each clone to prevent them from causing conflicts with the source VM before they are ready for use.  There will be at least a one hour time and materials charge per clone for managed customers.
