Most applications can use the URL ldap.berkeley.edu to connect to the CalNet LDAP Directory Service.
Specific LDAP operations such as adding, deleting and modifying LDAP entries must be performed against one of the master LDAP directory servers. If a client application attempts to perform one of these operations against an LDAP directory replica, the client application will receive an "LDAP Referral" pointing to the master LDAP Directory in the form of an URI. Some applications and languages can automatically follow LDAP referrals, while others may need to be specifically modified to do so.
