Chrome - Manually Re-enable Flash - Win/Mac

 

When Google Chrome 76 is released in July 2019, “Flash will be disabled by default, but can be enabled in Settings at which point explicit permission is still required for each site when the browser is restarted.”

Computers with the Google Chrome browser may start auto-updating to version 76 in July 2019, and messages like those below may start appearing in your browser sessions:



In order to use Flash on a webpage, you must manually re-enable it in the Google Chrome settings. You may use one of the two methods below to re-enable flash.

 

CalTime at UC Berkeley

UC Berkeley’s timekeeping system CalTime requires the use of Flash. The CalTime team is aware of Chrome disabling Flash in December 2020July 2019 and is actively working on upgrading CalTime to a version that does not require Flash. In the meantime, you must use one of the following methods below to re-enable Flash in Google Chrome.

 

Berkeley Desktop Managed Endpoints

Managed Windows and Mac Berkeley Desktops that utilize BigFix and Jamf Pro services will receive new policies in July 2019 that will attempt to automatically re-enable Flash in Google Chrome. The management policies will enable Flash but still require Chrome to “Ask First” before running Flash, similar behavior to what you see now in any modern version of Google Chrome.

 

Methods to Manually Re-enable Flash in Google Chrome



Method 1: Using the Flash Warning Prompt

(CalTime as the example)

 

  1. After logging into CalTime, if you see the following warning icon in the URL bar of your Chrome browser. It confirms that Chrome is blocking Flash.

 

  1. Clicking on the above warning icon will show this message prompt:

 

 

  1. Click “Manage” and toggle the button next to “Blocks sites from running Flash” to the left.  It will change to “Ask first (recommended).” This will re-enable Flash on a Chrome Browser.

 

 



Method 2 - Directly using the Chrome Settings:

 

  1. Launch Chrome then select the three vertical dots. Alternatively, type “chrome://settings/content/flash” in the Chrome URL field and go to Step 5

 

 

  1. Select “Settings” from the menu

 

 

  1. Select “Advanced” under Settings at the very bottom of the page:

 

 

  1. Scroll down and Click the “Site Settings” option then find the “Flash”

 

 

 

  1. Change the Flash setting “Ask First (recommended)” and toggle the button the right to re-enable Flash in the browser
