Managing SPA Membership in CalGroups
Special Purpose Accounts (SPAs) are entirely self-managed through CalGroups. While any campus employee, student, or affiliate can be a Direct Member of a SPA, only employees have the authority to create and manage the accounts.
How to Access SPA Management
To manage membership, you must log in as yourself (using your personal CalNet ID), not as the SPA. Use one of the two methods below:
Method A: Via the SPA Admin App (Recommended)
- Go to spa.berkeley.edu and log in as yourself.
- Find the SPA you wish to manage.
- Under "Manage Members in Grouper," select Go!
Method B: Directly via CalGroups
- Go to calgroups.berkeley.edu and log in as yourself.
- Search for the spa-name.
- Click on the SPA group (Note: The search results will show both the SPA account and the SPA group; select the group to manage access).

Management Tips
WARNING: Do not remove yourself and all other Direct Members from a SPA. If no members remain, you will lose the ability to manage the account. If this happens, you must email your UID to calnet@berkeley.edu to be added back. We strongly recommend each SPA has at least two Direct Members.
- Permissions: The SPA creator is the first member and has update permissions by default. Any user added as a Direct Member can add or delete other members.
- Departmental Authority: Department managers can modify membership, disable a SPA, or transfer ownership between departments by emailing calnet-admin@berkeley.edu.
- Active Directory: Note that SPAs are not available within Active Directory.
