A knowledge base article about Windows 8 Projection-Tips & Tricks provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub - Knowledge Portal

Overview

The ‘Start’ screen has 2 quick troubleshooting options for laptop projection. The first is to use the ‘Charms bar; to navigate to the ‘Device bar’; the second is to use ‘Desktop Tile’ to navigate to the ‘Mobility Center.’

Tip: You should also adjust ‘Power Options’ via the ‘Mobility Center’ so that your laptop doesn’t go into sleep mode during projection

The Charms Bar

You can get to the Charms bar no matter where you are in Windows 8: Press the Windows key + C on your keyboard, or swipe from the right edge of the screen toward the center on a touch-screen device. The charms bar appears with five charms on the background: Search, Share, Start, Devices, and Settings.

The Device Bar

Point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Devices. Tap or click Second screen and then choose one of these following options:

Desktop Tile

From the ‘Start’ Metro menu click on Desktop Tile (shortcut Press the Windows Key + D).

Right-click the lower-left portion of the screen (or press the Windows key + X), and a menu pops up that gives you access to the Mobility Center

Select Connect Display and choose one of these options:

  1. You’ll see the same things on both screens.
  2. Your screen is now spread over two monitors, and you can drag and move items between the two.
