I left my 2-Step device at home. What now?
If you cannot access your primary 2-Step device, try the following options to regain access to your account:
1. Use a Backup Device
If you have already enrolled a second device (such as a tablet, office phone, or security key), select the "Other options" link on the CalNet 2-Step screen to choose your secondary device for authentication.
2. Use Backup Passcodes
If you previously generated and printed backup passcodes, you can enter one of them now by selecting the "Enter a Passcode" option on the 2-Step screen.
For more information on setting up secondary devices or generating codes for future use, see: How to Use Single Use Codes
3. Request a Temporary Bypass Code
If you do not have a backup device or passcodes, you must contact support to receive a temporary bypass code:
- Email: calnet2-stephelp@berkeley.edu
- In Person: Visit the IT Service Desk during regular business hours.
Note: To receive a bypass code, you must be prepared to verify your identity. This typically requires a government-issued photo ID or a Cal 1 Card.
Pro-Tip: To prevent future lockouts, we strongly recommend enrolling at least two different devices in 2-Step. See our guide on Using Work and Personal Phones for Duo.
