Restricted VPN (rVPN)

A service overview and catalog of Restricted VPN (rVPN) provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub.

Description

The Restricted VPN provides a secure, encrypted connection to the UC Berkeley network for campus staff who handle highly sensitive data. Unlike the standard campus VPN, this offering is specifically designed to meet higher security standards required for accessing restricted resources and protecting against complex cyber threats.

Getting Started

Faculty and staff working with restricted data can obtain access through the following methods:

Request Access: Contact your Departmental Security Contact (DSC) to initiate a request.
Eligibility Inquiry: Email rvpn@berkeley.edu with a description of the types and quantities of data you are accessing, and where that data is stored.

Service Details

Eligibility	Campus faculty, staff, researchers, and affiliates who are authorized to work with P4-level restricted data.

Availability	Always-On: Available 24/7. Support is provided Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM PT, excluding University holidays and curtailment periods.
Cost	There are no direct costs associated with this service at this time.
Data Classification	This service is rated for P4 (Protection), A3 (Availability), and R3 (Recovery) data. Compliance: Users are responsible for ensuring data handled within this service complies with the Data and IT Resource Classification Standards.
