DNS, DHCP and IP Addressing

A service overview and catalog of DNS, DHCP and IP Addressing provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub.

Description

This service offering manages and provides access to technologies which underlie and support most basic network connectivity and network access.

The Domain Name System (DNS): provides a human-usable method for easily identifying and accessing online resources such as websites. It is also used by many systems to interconnect and exchange information. The Berkeley IT Network Services team manages the DNS infrastructure for campus and administers DNS records within domains like Berkeley.edu
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DNCP): is used to enable devices to be configured automatically for access when they connect to the network either via Wi-Fi or a wired port. This service is provided by default on most wired and wireless networks. The Network services team can provide customized DHCP service when required. Campus users can request a static or “fixed” DHCP configuration allowing an individual device to be specifically defined and configured.
IP addresses: are the method by which every individual device connected to a network is identified. Every device must have a unique, reachable IP address in order to connect to resources and transfer information. Berkeley IT manages and assigns IP addresses to ensure stability and usability of the campus network.

Cost	For campus community members this service is provided as part of the Data Network Assessment. There are no additional charges to departments or users. Complex or specialized network service within a data center may have additional implementation costs.
Data Classification	This service is rated for Protection Level P4, Availability Level A4, and Recovery Level RL4 data. Compliance: Users are responsible for ensuring data handled within this service complies with the Data and IT Resource Classification Standards.
