bSecure Shared Firewall

A service overview and catalog of bSecure Shared Firewall provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub.

Description

The Shared Firewall service provides a shared environment for general end-user activities. All users share a single firewall instance with a standard set of access rules appropriate for basic administrative computing.

Benefits & Features

This service is useful for many departments that would benefit from the protection offered by the firewall service, but do not have local IT expertise necessary for maintaining access rules.
This service provides firewall coverage to all departments at no additional cost.
Local IT staff may also choose to lower their administrative overhead by using the Shared Firewall for workstation subnets, while using a Departmental Firewall for their server or specialty networks.

Please keep in mind that the shared firewall service is not for everyone. Its use should be limited to subnets where the only devices it protects are workstations and printers. The shared firewall service should not be used to protect systems storing restricted data or hosting services for the campus or the internet. If a subnet requires customization for hosted services or stores restricted data, please use the Departmental Firewall service request to order your firewall.

Getting Started

Firewall services are managed by the Berkeley IT Network Services team.
To migrate an existing network to the Shared Firewall service, or to ask for a new Shared Firewall network to be created, use the Shared Firewall Service Request form.
