CalNet Accounts

A service overview and catalog of CalNet Accounts provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub.

Description

CalNet accounts are digital identities representing a user and are used to authenticate and authorize access to campus systems and resources. It functions as a unique identifier for individuals (employees, guests, students, etc.).

Anyone who uses electronic campus resources must abide by related campus policies, including the Acceptable User Policy.

CalNet ID

Special Purpose Account (SPA)

Description

A CalNet ID is a username that you will use with your CalNet passphrase to log in to most campus systems. For new accounts, the CalNet ID is also the handle of the user’s campus email account.

Do not reuse your CalNet passphrase for any other account login.

A Special Purpose Account (SPA) is a CalNet ID that can be shared by multiple users for collaborative purposes. SPAs are often used to manage shared Google drives and departmental email addresses.

CalNet Sponsored Guests is a service that allows a campus employee to invite a guest to log in to limited campus applications. Sponsored Guest accounts are for people who do not have an official university affiliation. See the user guide for more information.

Anyone who is a temporary, unpaid collaborator, visitor, guest, auditor, or conference attendee AND is invited to set up an account by a current employee.

Available 24/7. Support is provided Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM PT, excluding University holidays and curtailment periods.

There are no direct costs associated with this service.

Data Classification

This service is rated for P4, A3, and R3 data.

Compliance: Users are responsible for ensuring data handled within this service complies with the Data and IT Resource Classification Standards.
