A service overview and catalog of ChatGPT Education provided by the UC Berkeley IT Service Hub.

Description

ChatGPT Education is a premium subscription that provides access to an interactive, generative AI assistant with enhanced data protections under the University of California Terms and Conditions. When you use ChatGPT Education while logged in with your Berkeley account, your data is not used to train AI models and is not included in public AI query results.

ChatGPT Education is comparable to ChatGPT Plus in functionality, with differences in feature availability, administration, and data handling based on institutional licensing and governance requirements.

Features

Generate and edit text from prompts (including summaries, outlines, and drafts) and support logical and analytical tasks.
Create and share custom GPTs across UC Berkeley (e.g., AI tutors, course assistants, research tools).
Access substantially higher message and feature limits than Free or individual plans, supporting heavy academic and research workloads.
Protect student data, research outputs, and institutional intellectual property (P3 data).
Best Use: Advanced reasoning, data analysis, refined content creation, generative problem-solving, and building custom GPTs with enhanced data protections.

Limits & Requirements

Approved for UC P3 data.
Chats will be retained for 365 days.
To comply with OpenAI’s Terms of Use, each ChatGPT account must be assigned to, and used by, a single individual.
Apps (previously connectors) are not available to use at this time due to security requirements.

Getting Started

Submit an order via the ChatGPT Education Request Form, providing a valid chartstring.

If you currently have a free or paid ChatGPT account: once your Edu subscription is enabled, you will be able to transfer your existing chat history and GPTs (plug-ins, custom instructions and apps will be deleted/disconnected).

Service Details

Eligibility	Faculty, staff and Special Purpose Accounts (SPAs) require a valid chartstring to pay for subscription fees. Licenses assigned to SPAs may only be used by a single individual to comply with OpenAI’s terms of service.
